For our family, the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without the time-honored tradition of building gingerbread houses. It’s a wonderful way to bring everyone together, unleash creativity, and, of course, indulge in a little festive snacking.
Each year, we head to the dollar store to stock up on an incredible array of candy. From bright gumdrops and candy canes to chocolate coins and sprinkles, the variety ensures every gingerbread house we make is bursting with color, personality, and flavor. The candy selection is as much a part of the fun as the building itself—there’s something magical about letting the kids pick out their favorite treats.
We usually opt for the store-bought gingerbread kits from Walmart, which are affordable, convenient, and save us time during the busy holiday season. However, if you’re feeling ambitious, you could always bake your own gingerbread and create elaborate designs. The beauty of this tradition is its flexibility—it can be as simple or as intricate as you want.
Homemade icing is a must for us. Not only does it work better as glue, but the kids love nibbling on it along with the candy, which means our houses gradually shrink throughout December. By the time Christmas Day rolls around, what’s left is a colorful masterpiece that’s been enjoyed in more ways than one.
What makes this tradition so special is that it’s not about perfection. It’s about gathering around the table, sharing laughter, and making memories that outlast the gingerbread.
So, what are your holiday traditions? Whether it’s baking, crafting, or something entirely unique, traditions like these are what make the season truly magical.
