How to Make Sure Your Pool is Safe

Safety should be your number one priority if you have a pool in your backyard,  especially if you have young children. Fortunately, there are several steps that you can take to make your pool and the area surrounding it safer for you and your family. From installing a pool fence to using a pool cover, here are five ways that you can make your swimming pool safer.

  1. Install a fence

One of the most effective ways to keep your pool area safe and prevent drowning is to install a fence around your pool area. This acts as a barrier between your pool and your children, and there are many different types of pool fences to choose from.

For example, a modern glass pool fence is perfect for contemporary-style homes, providing a sleek and luxurious look as well as high levels of safety. Alternatively, if you live in a period property or one that boasts more traditional décor, there are lots of other materials for pool fences available such as an iron or wooden fence.

  1. Supervise children using the pool at all times

When it comes to pool safety, don’t underestimate the importance of vigilance, as even with the best will in the world, accidents can still happen. If your children or your guests’ children are using your pool or even just playing around the pool area, make sure that at least one adult is watching them at all times.

Furthermore, if you’re having a pool party or a gathering in your backyard, it can be a good idea to have more than one adult on watch whenever any children are in or near the pool.

  1. Schedule regular checks

Swimming pools need to be properly maintained throughout the year, as damages can cause injuries For example, if a tile has become dislodged or chipped, this could cause someone to trip over or cut themselves.

Although you should regularly check your swimming pool yourself before each use, it can also be a good idea to book an annual service with a pool maintenance and repair professional to carry out a more thorough check.

  1. Cover it over when not in use

When your swimming pool isn’t in use, make sure that it’s properly covered as this can help to prevent accidents. During the winter months, when your swimming pool isn’t in use for a long time, it can be a good idea to invest in a winter pool cover that offers the best protection during the colder months of the year.

As well as offering enhanced safety, a high-quality pool cover can also help to reduce heat loss, which results in lower heating bills and a more environmentally friendly pool.

  1. Enforce poolside safety

Poolside safety refers to the measures you take to keep the area surrounding your swimming pool safe. For example, removing any tripping hazards such as toys, garden supplies, and pool equipment.

Also, make sure that your children always walk around the pool area rather than run as slipping on wet surfaces can cause serious injuries.
